Emerging perils: offshore risks

Companies are rushing to source from low-cost countries without considering all the hidden risks.

...low-cost country sourcing can compromise a troubling corporate blind spot, says Adrian Griffiths, business development director at Vendigital. "There's something of a herding instinct in place," he says. "Companies have been going to China without doing the research necessary to know what's the best option."

"...It's a superb location, but so much depends on what you're buying, the amount you're buying, the length of the contract and where the product is in your product lifecycle".

Outsourced e-procurement can deliver 26% savings and better technology

Less than 5% of manufacturers that could benefit from outsourced e-procurement are doing so - and those that are not are missing out on savings that average at 26% of material costs.

So says global procurement services and software form Vendigital, which recommends a 'category management' approach to procurement, pointing not only to value from bulk discounts but best suppliers and best geographies on a per-manufactuer basis.

Speaking at Vendigital's Dealing with the Future seminar this month in London, Lamming said purchasers will be replaced by improved technology and a new breed of 'deal shapers'. But, he added, buyers would continue to be employed because offices would not 'feel right' without them.

Cancer Research UK saves over £2.5 million pa via On Line Auctions including equipment for its new Cambridge Research Institute

Cancer Research UK announces savings of over £2.5 million per annum achieved through a series of online auctions managed by Aria Insite and Vendigital to purchase office supplies, IT hardware and laboratory consumables. The savings on millions of pounds worth of spend are part of the charity’s Procurement Improvement initiative across the whole organisation.

Belinda Turner, Procurement Director at Cancer Research UK said: "Initially, there was some scepticism that online auctions could deliver such huge savings. Now with three projects under our belts, we are convinced that this approach is extremely valuable.

Peter Garnett, Managing Director at Aria Insite, said: "The auctions are only successful because Vendigital follows rigorous processes before, during and after the actual events."

Buyers need to be able to switch suppliers from country to country quickly and simply to benefit from low-cost sourcing.

That was the view of Professor Richard Lamming, director of the School of Management at the University of Southampton, at a low-cost country sourcing (LCCS) seminar in London last month.

Lamming said switching locations will maintain competitive advantage.

"Low-cost sourcing is not about a place or country, it's the process of being able to move quickly."

£200k saved for university

A Swindon online auction company stepped in to save a UK university £200,000. Vendigital of the Windmill Business Park organised the auction for buying stationery and as a result the University of Northumbria saved 35 per cent of its annual paper budget.

Twelve suppliers placed 312 bids within the 90-minute online event "We were delighted with the results," said Trevor Gabriele, of the university. "We felt we could get better value so decided to undertake a pilot online auction. We were keen to see how the process worked and to judge its value." The university contracted PricewaterhouseCoopers to run the auction and they in turn appointed Vendigital.

Vendigital managed all the supplier questions and handled the online auction event, including training suppliers in the use of the software. The team also managed the post-auction interviews and the contract award process to ensure the chosen supplier satisfied all the university's quality and delivery needs. Business director Adrian Griffiths was delighted with the transaction.

Big supply chain software implementations were supposed to be a 'cure-all' a few years ago but does that still hold true in a much changed global environment? This was the question posed by Malcolm Wheatley in a recent article in The Manufacturer. He concluded that "Despite a bumpy start, supply chain software can offer a genuine return."

However, part of his evidence for this conclusion came from an interview with Neil Robinson, European vice-president of supply chain operations at Bristol based Vetco Gray, a manufacturer of drilling and pipeline products for the oil industry. In the interview Neil commented "Conventional e-auction procurement software wasn’t the right answer for us. We met up with Vendigital and realised they understood mechanical engineering and weren't simply focused on large volumes of readily sourced standard materials. "

Clearly there is a lot more to success within complex supply chains than a piece of software, a fact that our customers understand!

Later he was interviewed by Malcolm Wheatley for "Supply Management" to discover what he felt were the credentials required in today’s global economy to be a Purchasing Director.

"...probably the biggest challenge facing the new purchasing director is coming to grips with taking responsibility for the business as a whole, rather than retaining a narrow functional perspective. A strong sense of commercial nouse is required – not just in terms of the work of the purchasing department, but in terms of the contribution that it makes to the business as a whole."

But given the sheer number of possible suppliers in the world and the limits of my purchasing resources, how can I possibly be sure I have the best prices?"

An eye to saving more than mere money

Journalist Andrew Ward interviewed Vendigital customer Brian Cattmull, Purchasing Manager at Linx Printing Technologies. In the resulting article Brian outlined the benefits of the purchasing techniques used by Vendigital. But are e-sourcing and online negotiation only about price? There are no silly games or heated negotiations: instead you can concentrate on issues like quality, delivery and vendor assessment".

Negotiating price via an online auction is a technique that is not going away. The benefits to the buyer are clear, but in this article the suppliers view is outlined. 66% of suppliers believe information about the competitiveness of their quotations is more reliable when presented to them via an online tender than if given to them by a buyer.

In this article the question is asked, are online auctions damaging the print industry? The answer is of course, no. The online negotiation is providing transparency in the marketplace and a rapid determination of market price. If companies are going out of business due to over supply one cannot “blame” the negotiation technique, just the old principle of supply and demand.

Market Price Secrets

The ability to determine market price for anything other than a pure commodity has until recently been constrained by the inability to communicate accurately and efficiently with sufficient numbers of companies to be representative of the total marketplace. E-sourcing has eliminated the constraint and online auctioning has made negotiating with a private marketplace effective and meaningful. The result is that marketprice can now be determined for bespoke purchases.
